The mother at the centre of two investigations involving the deaths of her two newborns is currently free.
Vancouver police were convinced the woman's second baby met foul play during an interview March 29.
Investigators learned the child was born in early March but had not been seen since.
Police said the same woman gave birth to the baby who was found inside a plastic bag outside her home in the 2500 block of Charles Street in March 2009. Coroners ruled the first death as suspicious.
"The reality is there are no restrictions on her freedom, her movement, any of her activities just because she's involved in an investigation," explained Const. Jana McGuinness. "She's not charged with anything."
Police began searching for the newborn Wednesday at the same location where the first infant was found.
"It's difficult even for seasoned investigators to manage a case like this," said McGuinness. "No one would ever think they would be doing an investigation like this again inside of a year."
Recovering the child's body is essential for investigators looking to press homicide charges through the Crown. McGuinness was unable to comment on the woman's state of mind or any interviews with family.
