Cops rule out homicide

Foul play didn't cause the death of young woman found Saturday in Pacific Spirit Park, according to police.

"Based on the investigation at the scene, the physical condition of the deceased person along with preliminary findings of the autopsy we can confirm that we are not dealing with a homicide," Sgt. Peter Thiessen told reporters Monday. "The official cause of death is still pending toxicology reports."

The RCMP spokesman added investigators are close to positively identifying the woman as Sukching "Selina" Hui who was last seen at her home in the 7800 block of Knight Street in the afternoon of May 28.

Vancouver police said at the time, Hui was a "shy and reserved person" and her disappearance was "out of character".

The woman's body was found, with no apparent physical trauma, 30 metres into the bush off Clinton Trail.

Police released the information based on preliminary findings after recognizing a heightened level of concern from the community still coming to terms with the brutal murder of Wendy Ladner-Beaudry in April 2009.

Integrated Homicide Investigation Team spokesman Cpl. Dale Carr said the Ladner-Beaudry file remains open and active.

"What people need to bear in mind and keep in mind is that often times investigations take a great deal of time," he said.

Sgt. Thiessen couldn't say if Mounties would step up patrols in the park after residents launched a second call for increased security after Saturday's incident.

Investigators will now work to determine if the cause of death was an accident, self-inflicted or brought on by natural causes.
